TL, MDX Leading Acura's Sales

"Although production shortages from Japan have greatly improved, the overall ripple effect from low inventory continues to hurt sales," Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales, said today. "However, with most models returning to full production (this month), we are hoping for a strong finish to the year."
Acura's MDX remains the brand's best-selling model in July. But Acura car sales exceeded truck sales last month, according to figures released today. Acura total car sales for July were 4,762, down 24.4%, and total Acura sales were 9,402 units. That's down 25%. Year-to-date sales through July are 70,082 cars and trucks, down 5.5% from year-ago levels.
The top seller in July was the TL performance sedan with 2,555 units sold, still down 15%. The TSX sports sedan had 2,137 buyers last month. Its sales are also down, 31.5%.
Acura sold 4,640 trucks in July, most of them MDXs (3,438 units). MDX sales fell 14.9%. The RDX crossover SUV had 1,100 buyers.

Disappointing Forecast

Honda's annual operating profit forecast is not conservative, given the yen's strength and soaring raw materials prices, the automaker's chief financial officer said on Tuesday.
Japan's No.3 automaker this month forecast a worse-than-expected 65 percent fall in annual operating profit to 200 billion yen ($2.5 billion) for the year to March 2012. Many analysts consider its guidance overly conservative, with consensus forecasts putting the profit at 412 billion yen, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
"I don't think assuming 80 yen to the dollar is conservative at all," Fumihiko Ike told a small group of reporters in an interview, explaining the expected sharp drop in earnings.
"The same goes for raw material prices."
Ike said potential shortages of electricity in Japan following the nuclear disaster caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami likely meant resources-poor Japan would need to step up its imports of natural gas and other energy sources.
"And for that, a stronger yen is better," Ike said. "We in the manufacturing sector may cry out for relief but...I suspect such forces may be at work."
Honda's assumption that a rise in raw material prices would have a negative impact of 80 billion yen on profits this year was also not overly pessimistic, he said.
"Before, it used to be about rising precious metals prices. Now, on top of that, we're dealing with an incredible surge in rare earth prices as hybrid cars become more popular," he said.
Precious metals such as platinum are used in catalytic converters needed to reduce tailpipe emissions, while rare earth elements such as dysprosium and neodymium are needed for electric motors fitted in fuel-efficient hybrid cars.
Honda said on Tuesday it had received 12,000 orders for the new Fit Shuttle station wagon in Japan, about three times the monthly sales target. Of that, 86 percent chose the hybrid option.
Rare earth prices have been soaring since China, which controls more than 95 percent of global supply, restricted exports late last year. The China offer price of dysprosium now hovers around $3,600-$3,800 a kg, up from $300 a year ago, and neodymium is traded above $450, up from $45.
Honda's cost and sales assumptions translate into a cost increase of around 24,000 yen per car this year. Honda is expecting a 6 percent drop in its global car sales to 3.3 million vehicles.
ACURA DRIVE
Honda's 200 billion yen profit forecast would yield an operating margin of 2.4 percent, less than half of rival Nissan Motor Co's projection of 4.9 percent for 2011/12.
Nissan on Monday mapped out a business plan to boost that margin to a sustainable 8 percent within six years, partly fuelled by a global expansion of the Infiniti luxury brand.
Ike said Honda was also preparing a big model offensive for its premium Acura brand, which sells about the same number of cars as Infiniti, or around 160,000 a year.
"We've got quite a number of new models in the pipeline," Ike said, declining to provide details. He added, however, that unlike Nissan, Honda had no plans to spread the brand into more markets. Honda sells Acura cars in North America and China.

Canadian Milestone

Honda Canada announced today the Acura division just sold its 400,000th vehicle in Canada since its launch in 1987.

"And after nearly 25 years of sales in Canada, four of every five Acura vehicles are still on the road, which is a testament to Acura's renowned durability," said Jerry Chenkin, Executive Vice President, of Honda Canada Inc. in a press release this morning. "Another important fact is that of the 400,000 Acura vehicles sold in Canada, more than one-third of those were built right here in Canada."

Sign of things to come ...

Pacific Honda, a dealership in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Honda is telling its American and Canadian auto dealers to honor discount offers on vehicles that they do and do not have in stock. Honda realizes that they have low inventories on models such as the Civic and are going forth with these discounts because they do not want to send people away without taking care of them. The offer is not available on cars built in Japan such as the Honda Fit and the Honda Insight. Acura dealerships across North America are also making a similar offer. Discounts are given to encourage existing inventory sales. Earlier this month, Honda warned that its operating profit could fall as much as 65% this year due to the Japan earthquake because of the delays in launching several models such as the Fit Shuttle and major problems with the launch of the new 2012 Civic. Toyota is equally hurt in this battle while the Korean and American manufacturers have gained at the Japanese's loss.

Honda Tops JD Power Study

Honda has earned its best ranking, at 2nd place in a recent J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study for 2011. Honda led the industry having 7 models earn the top initial quality spots including the Honda Accord and Honda Civic. Honda's premium brand, Acura was next in line, topping out at 3rd place. "We are confident that sales will rebound as our North American plants reach 100-percent production capacity for most models in August."

Acura Division posted May sales of 9,000 units, a decrease of 17.1 percent from the same period last year. The MDX luxury sport utility vehicle led the division with sales of 3,824, an increase of 1.9 percent over May 2010.

Cuts Come Again!

Honda has announced that its workers will take 14 additional days off from June to August due to disruptions in manufacturing operations driven by parts shortages. The parts shortage came on the back of earthquake and tsunami in Japan on March 11 that damaged many parts supplying companies’ plants and paralyzed the power supply system.

The workers will take one extra day off in June, 10 days in July and 3 days in August. However, the workers need to work extra days in the latter half of the fiscal year to make up for the production shortfall.
The plants affected by the latest move include auto plants in Saitama and Suzuka and a motorcycle plant in Hamamatsu. Honda has informed the union that the workers may need to take additional days off in the coming months if the parts shortages continue.

Recently, Honda revealed that it will halve production at its Sumare, Brazil plant due to the same problem. The output at the plant will be reduced to 300 units per day from the current 600 units per day and production shifts will be curtailed to two from three. The company has already retrenched 400 employees at the plant.

Honda has also alerted its U.S. dealers about supply shortages of its popular models, Civic compact and CR-V small SUV, due to lower availability of parts that will support the required production level to meet their demand.

Apart from these two models, Honda stated that it will cut supply of Acura luxury cars as well as TSX wagon and the RL sedan until later in the year. It also revealed that it will be able to import only a limited number of Japan-built cars in the U.S, which include Fit subcompact, CR-Z, Insight and Civic gas-electric hybrids until later in the year.

Recently, the company revealed that domestic production volume will remain at approximately 50% of the original production plan until the end of June. However, it will be normalized before the end of 2011.

"The new 2012 Civic just went on sale toward the end of April with strong market demand, which helped us achieve Civic sales of 5,224, in line with sales from last year," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc.
"Although Civic production has been significantly reduced due to a shortage of critical parts from Japan, we will be doing our best to meet the demand for the new Civic through the rest of the spring and summer months. With production issues that may affect availability of certain Honda and Acura products through the coming months, we sincerely apologize for any unfortunate delay our customers might encounter in taking delivery of their new car or truck, and we appreciate their understanding of this situation.  Our dealers will take every step to provide the best level of service while customers wait."
Honda Canada Inc. has sold more than 3.4 million Honda and Acura passenger cars and light-duty trucks in Canada over the past 38 years.  More than 94% of the Honda and Acura vehicles sold in Canada in April were produced at the company's assembly plants in North America, up from 93% the same month last year.

Acura: Celebrating 25 Years

From its humble beginnings as a small automobile company that launched in 1986 as a niche in the market, to today where Acura is pursuing top-notch styling and technological advancements, the past 25 years have been a roller coaster of feats and disappointments for Honda`s luxury company. From the Integra and Legend that set sales records in 1986-1987, to the rakish TL and dynamic ZDX that set styling records, Acura has been through not only an identity crisis, but a styling crisis and a marketing crisis. Automobile has a wrap-up of Acura`s past 25 years. http://rumors.automobilemag.com/acura-celebrates-25-year-anniversary-market-37411.html

The next 25 years? Who knows. Small Acura sub-TSX model to arrive. RL predecessor to arrive. Hybrid powertrains to be developed for the Acura lineup. All we know. But for one thing, let's hope Acura returns to its roots.

S-H-I-E-L-D & Acura

Get ready for Marvel Comics and Paramount Pictures to rule commercial time leading up to their new Thormovie that premiers on May 6. The film, which will be followed up with Captain America later this summer, follows two Iron Man movies and the 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Those films make up the lengthy run-up to the release of The Avengers movie next summer that will feature all the good guys on one silver screen.

Predictably, Thor will be jammed with corporate sponsors and product placements, which will lead to still more Thor commercials. Even Acura has gotten in on the act, as the upscale Honda brand has nabbed the roll as the vehicle of choice for the good guys at S.H.I.E.L.D., who are working hard to get all the superheros on the same team (hello, Avengers). Acura, whose corporate styling language already involves the shield-shaped front fascia that so many have complained about, were more interested in the role due to S.H.I.E.L.D's high-tech, cutting edge reputation. The automaker will reportedly receive an amazing two minutes of air time during the movie, and Acura even allowed the bad guys to blow up some of its vehicles.

Acura no doubt paid big bucks to get all that screen time, but that's not all it plans to do. Variety reports that Acura will push the movie in commercials, while also hosting Thor events at local dealerships that include giving away some tickets for advanced screenings.

Record Sales of the Civic Push Canadian Honda/Acura Sales in March 2011

"Despite the tragic events in Japan this past month, our sales have not been impacted thus far," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc.  "Our dealerships remain fully stocked with fun-to-drive and innovative Honda and Acura products for the Canadian consumer.  However, we do continue to monitor our sales and production situations on a daily basis.

"As expected, we saw a strong sales surge of Civic in the month of March.  Canadians continue to recognize the value and DQR of the best-selling passenger vehicle in Canada, surpassing the previous record by over 900 units.  With gas prices continuing to rise, consumers also appreciate the high fuel efficiency of our entire Civic line-up," added Mr. Chenkin.  "We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the all-new Canadian-built 2012 Civic coming in late April."

"The reduction of Honda sales for the month mainly reflected the fact that Canadians are awaiting the arrival of the all-new Canadian-built 2012 Civic coming in late April," added Mr. Chenkin.  "We expect to see a strong sales surge as we enter the spring and summer selling seasons."
